Diego Simeone believes that qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals once again illustrates the progress he has made at Atletico Madrid.
A 1-1 draw at the KP Stadium in their second leg fixture against Leicester on Wednesday morning saw the Rojiblancos book a spot in the tournament’s final four.
Now having made the semi-finals for the second straight season, Simeone says that Atletico are turning into a continental powerhouse.
“I’m full of emotion,” he told reporters after the match.
“Full of pride at the performance of my team and full of hope and excitement as we progress further in the competition.
“The fact is we are in the semi-finals again and that’s fantastic.
“Just looking back on the first day at the club, I said my desire was to make Atletico Madrid competitive and I wanted to make life hard for every team that we played against.
“It’s good, it’s satisfying to say now we are a competitive outfit.
Simeone also praised the spirit of their opponents Leicester, however, who he says never approached the match like underdogs.
“I also have to say what a great performance from Leicester tonight,” he added.
“It was almost a pleasure to compete against them, they never gave up for one minute, they didn’t let their heads drop.
“We were living in fear all night of what they might achieve as they were coming forward, they put in a fantastic performance and pushed us all the way.”
