Portugal gave up a lead on two occasions to open their Confederations Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Mexico on Monday morning.

There was controversy from the outset of the match, with the VAR system brought into use to disallow a headed goal from Pepe after a Cristiano Ronaldo attempt had struck the crossbar.

The Portuguese were only kept out until the half-hour mark, however, when Ronaldo brilliantly picked out an open Ricardo Quaresma for a simple one-on-one finish against Guillermo Ochoa.

Although Fernando Santos’ men looked in firm control, it took just one chance for Javier Hernandez to restore parity leading into half-time. The deadlocked remained until the final 10 minutes, when an unfortunate Hector Herrera deflection looked to have handed victory to Portugal

The reigning Euro champions could not hold out until the end though, with some lacklustre defending inside the box allowing Hector Moreno to head a second equaliser home in stoppage time.
