The Socceroos started the 2017 Confederations Cup with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Germany on Monday night.
It was a testing start to the match for Ange Postecoglou’s men, with Lars Stindl finishing off a quick passing move to put Die Mannschaft ahead inside the opening five minutes. Although the reigning World Cup champions would largely control the momentum from there, Tom Rogic gave Australia some hope with an equaliser against the run of play – yet even this was short lived as Julian Draxler converted from the spot before half-time after Mass Luongo had fouled Leon Goretzka.
The 22-year-old would put the result beyond doubt following the break with an impressive finish, despite Tomi Juric reducing the deficit in the 55th minute.

Scoreline papers over a few cracks for the Socceroos, but improved second half should give them belief. Exciting game, work to do. #AUSGER

About 1000x better in the second half but still plenty of work to do #AUSGER

Fair to say our first half cost us there. Germany the better side overall, however we go in with confidence against Chile & Cameroon #AUSGER

For anyone deeply criticising Mass Luongo, had a bad day, so does everyone, he’s proven quality so get off his case. He can play. #AUSGER

#AUSGER if only Mass didn’t foul in the box.. Good old hindsight..

IMO the most important thing remains being ready to get a result in Japan. 1st half a mess, but 2nd a step in the right direction. #AUSGER
