Newcastle Jets have announced a selection of their premier young players will venture to China to take part in an annual youth tournament.
The Jets have been invited to the Weifang Cup, which will be played in China’s Shandong Province in late July.
Newcastle’s crop will feature players from their National Premier League team and the Emerging Jets system and will face off against 17 other teams in two groups of eight.
The top two teams in the groups will progress beyond the round robin stage.
In the tournament, the Jets will face FC Tokyo (Japan), Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico), Odense Boldklub (Denmark) and VfL Wolfsburg (Germany).
“We are extremely proud to have been invited to participate in the 2017 Weifang Cup, which is acknowledged by FIFA and approved by the Asian Football Confederation,” Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna said.
“Last year world heavyweights Real Madrid participated in the Weifang Cup, which highlights how highly regarded the tournament is.”
In the A-League, Newcastle’s senior team suffered a huge setback in their chase for a finals position, beaten 4-0 at AAMI Park by Melbourne City.
