Southampton forward Nathan Redmond has spoken of his regret at wasting a number of presentable chances as his side won 1-0 against Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup Semi-Final first leg at St. Mary’s.
“I should have had four today, on another day they might go in. We got the win in the first leg so we take it on to the second leg,” Redmond said to Sky Sports 1.
When asked which chances he felt were most presentable, Redmond responded: “The first one and the last one. The last one I tried to be a bit too smart and just chip it over. I’ll take those mistakes and try to put it right in training and the next game.”
The victory was Southampton’s first in nearly a month since a 3-1 triumph at Bournemouth. Home losses against West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham deflated Claude Puel’s side, before suffering a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Everton at Goodison on January 3.
On the overall improved performance against Liverpool, Redmond said: “We got a clean sheet and a win in the first leg so we’ll take that on to the second. It’s credit to the whole team, we’ve got to work hard for each other and we did that today.”
