Melbourne City better than ‘Roarcelona’, Luke Brattan says

Luke Brattan believes Melbourne City boast an “all-round better squad” than the all-conquering Brisbane Roar side he formed part of in the early decade.

Brattan plied his trade for the Roar between 2008 and 2015, winning three championships in the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons.

Brisbane completed the premiership/championship double in the former and lattermost campaigns, when they had the likes of Besart Berisha, Matt Smith and Erik Paartalu still on their books.

Like that famous ‘Roarcelona’ era, City have compiled an abundance of talent but could only manage a fourth-placed finish in the A-League having won the 2016 FFA Cup.

Ahead of their do or die elimination final against Perth Glory, Brattan claimed that while his old side was a better team, his current club can say it has a better squad.

“I went through this in Brisbane a fair few times and it is a different feeling, we’re going into the finals off the back of a very strange game (against Perth, 5-4 on Easter Sunday),” Brattan said.

“In Brisbane, we always had a fair bit of momentum going into the finals, teams knew what to expect from us.

“At the same time, I think that this squad is better than the one I was in at Brisbane. I know it’s hard to say that, but the quality we have all around the park is phenomenal.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to win more games, score more points.

“I know that we can do things we when play well and gel together, it’s scary, and we see that day in, day out at training. If we do what we can, we’ll have no problems.”

A City victory will see them face premiers and champions-elect Sydney FC in a semi-final, should Brisbane Roar prevail against Western Sydney Wanderers at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Brattan aimed something of a barb at the Sky Blues, suggesting their own squad “is not the best”.

“I think that the Sydney squad’s not the best squad, but they’re a good group, they’re consistent and they’ve broken records, and that’s a credit to them.

“It’s hard to describe, but the individuals that we have in this squad are phenomenal and it’s rare to get that in a squad with the salary cap.

“We’re going to need all that quality in the finals.”
