FC Barcelona’s Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic has been announced to have inked a new contract with the Catalan club.
Rakitic’s contract was due to expire in 2019, but his improved bumper deal will see him remain at Camp Nou until 2021.
The contract also features a huge buyout clause, which is expect to diminish links between the 28-year-old and Manchester City.
The figure outlined in the clause is €125 million.
Rakitic joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2014 and has gone on to score 17 goals in 89 games for the Catalonia giants.
He has not been a regular in Luis Enrique’s best XI this season, however, due to increased competition from the likes of Rafinha and Andre Gomes.
Rakitic joins Javier Mascherano, Sergio Busquets, Neymar and Luis Suarez as Barcelona players to have recommitted to the club this season.
Barca’s incredible win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 saw them through to the last eight, where they will accompany Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
In La Liga, Barca sit at the top of the table with a point’s advantage over Real Madrid, but Los Blancos have one game in hand.
