Huddersfield Town suffered a major blow to their chase for automatic promotion, handed a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Friday night.
Goals from Lee Tomlin, Tammy Abraham, Aden Flint and David Cotterill sealed the Terriers’ fate, leaving them six points behind second-placed Brighton and four ahead of Reading in fourth.
By contrast, City’s win takes them out of the relegation zone, at least for the time being. They sit 19th, two points above the danger zone.
Both Bailey Wright and Aaron Mooy started the game for their respective sides, but it was the former who went away the happier.
Both players are included in Ange Postecoglou’s 23-man Socceroos squad to face Iraq and UAE next week.
In Germany, Mathew Leckie returned to the FC Ingolstadt starting XI after two weeks out with suspension.
Unfortunately for Leckie, the Bavaria-based team suffered another dint in their chace for Bundesliga survival, beaten 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park by Borussia Dortmund.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 14th-minute goal was enough to see BVB claim the three points.
Leckie is also a part of Postecoglou’s travelling party.
In the Eredivise, Danny de Silva was again absent from Roda JC’s matchday squad.
