Fresh from the streets of Brazil, Neymar Jr’s Five tournament is bringing the samba style to Australia and a city near you in May.
The five-a-side concept, sponsored by Red Bull, is holding qualifiers in states and territories around Australia with the final to be played in Melbourne on 10 June, just in time for the Brazilian national team’s visit to our shores.
Teams consist predominantly of 16 to 25-year-olds, though two players can be older than said age, and is not gender limited. Break down your opponents by breaking through their defence. Each goal forces one opponent off the field.
Melbourne Victory great Archie Thompson believes the tournament’s fast and furious gameplay will help reinstall South American flair into the Australian game.
“The concept’s been developed over Neymar’s upbringing of football, playing on the streets of his home town,” Thompson explained.
“(For) the majority of those footballers, that’s where it all started for them.
“I’m a big believer in the need to have that Brazilian influence here in our development because we’ve lost that flair a little bit.
“This is a good competition for amateurs to put a team. It’s a lot different, the concept. You go with five-a-side, you score a goal and one (opposition) player leaves, so it’s five against four. It’s 10 minutes per game, so it’s pacey.
“You get the opportunity, if you win your state finals, you play a national final which is here in Melbourne on 10 June. It coincides perfectly with it Brazil versus the Socceroos.
“If you win it, you go to Brazil, play 50 other countries and you get the chance to go to a Barcelona game and meet Neymar.”
Players wishing to register a team for the series can do so by following the prompts at the Neymar Jr’s Five official website.
The winning Australian team will progress onto the world stage in Brazil and play off against other countries.
The overall victor will score a visit to Barcelona, watch the Blaugrana in action and meet Neymar himself.
What more motivation could you need?!
